Maco CX-4 Dispenser

The heavy use professional soap dispenser

When Maco Products was in search of a new dispenser for their professional hand cleansers, the design briefing was clear.

A recognizable, modern, and clean design without pretensions, fitting seamlessly into professional working environments. Not unnecessarily large, but a slim fit design to shield the functional components such as the pump, and the new cartridge in development. Additionally, it had to withstand many years of intensive use in demanding automotive and aerospace sectors, so no compromises on quality.

While the latter might sound like an obvious requirement, it’s quite common in this market to give away low-end dispensers almost for free to persuade users to buy your refills. Our goal and conviction were to develop a dispenser of sustainable quality that, through its reliable performance, creates satisfied and brand loyal users.

Integrated Product Development

To successfully approach such an integral design project, we started at the core: the dispenser pump. After creating a proof-of-concept prototype that met all functional requirements and was compact enough, the other elements were brought into the picture.

The pump and cartridge position were determined based on ease of use. We opted for a full-size handle and a dosing nozzle which is perfectly aligned with the palm for optional single-handed operation.

The cartridge has a generous capacity of 4 liters, offering 800 doses per refill. This blowmolded refill has a deliberate funnel shape, which takes up extra space but ensures no residue remains in the cartridge, minimizing waste. With the patented Dual Valve System, replacing the cartridge is quick and clean. The smart Anti Drip dosing system also prevents leakage from the dosing nozzle. Wash your hands, not your sink.

Once satisfied with functionality, layout, and ergonomics, we proceeded to finalize the design of the enclosure. To clearly distinguish between the opening cover and fixed base of the dispenser, these were designed in both a contrasting color and texture.

Parallel proces

Simultaneously, the pump and housing were further harmonized. The double compression springs ensure stable operation, and are pressing directly on the mounting surface to spare the enclosure from the operating forces. All these plastic injection molded components are robustly designed, for instance, the cover is generously provided with reinforcing ribs. Both solutions are aimed at quality and durability.

Thanks to the design process with parallel development of function, form, ergonomics and production, the Maco CX-4 sets the benchmark in the market, making it an elegant example of integral product development.
